A touch of history in every grape: The birth of Riesling in Rüsselsheim
Rüsselsheim am Main – Anno 1435. The world is sinking into bitter cold. The winters are long and merciless, while the summer is a wet blessing for the fields. In the midst of these whims of nature, the cellar master of the Count of Katzenelnbogen writes his annual accounts on March 13th. Between the expenses for a new harrow and two plows, a special item appears: saplings for a vineyard in Rüsselsheim. The grape variety? A novelty, called “Riesling”.
Was it the unmistakable aroma that prompted the cellar master to invest? Or was it the clever adaptation to the inhospitable conditions? The Riesling, frost-resistant and blessed with late budding, withstood the icy winters better than the frost-sensitive Silvaner or the Elbling, which is at risk of late-morning collapse. Rüsselsheim – so close in sound to the name of the vine – became the silent birthplace of a legend.
The winemakers accepted the late ripening and the low yields, because a bitter drop was always better than an empty cup. Nobody at the time suspected that this wine would one day conquer the world. Today, Riesling is an indispensable part of the steep slopes of the Middle Rhine – valued for its elegance, its complexity and the unmistakable signature of the terroir.
It was not until 1787 that the last Elector of Trier, Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony, declared the cultivation of single varieties to be an official practice in his lands (to which Oberwesel also belonged at that time). But the true origin of Riesling lies much earlier – in the unyielding determination of those who, despite the adverse circumstances, believed in the potential of a small, robust vine.
A piece of this history shimmers in every bottle of Riesling: of bitter winters, glistening summers and the unwavering will of the winemakers who create a liquid masterpiece year after year.
