Description
The Engehöller Goldemund vineyard in the Middle Rhine Valley near Oberwesel is located on steep south-facing slopes (80–200 metres, up to 70% gradient) and benefits from plenty of sunshine. The slate soil with quartzite and loam provides minerality, freshness and good water retention. The main variety is hand-crafted Riesling. The wines display clear fruit aromas, citrus and stone fruit notes, lively acidity and a harmonious balance between fruit and minerality – typical, precise Middle Rhine Rieslings.
The vintage:
The 1998 wine year was very pleasing overall in the Middle Rhine region and benefited above all from excellent conditions in autumn. After an early, promising start, the summer was changeable, but the long, stable and warm late autumn allowed the grapes to ripen excellently – especially on the sun-drenched steep slopes. The wines are clear, elegant and typical of the Middle Rhine, with a fine, lively acidity and harmonious fruit. In good locations, expressive quality and Prädikat wines were produced, including Spätlesen and, in some cases, Auslesen, which impress with their balance and purity. A vintage that captivates with its finesse, straightforwardness and great drinkability.
