Description

Oberwesel is situated in the center of the romantic world heritage site upper middle rhine valley. The mediveal Oberwesel stands for the origin of Riesling culture on the rhine and is still vividly portraying it to date. In our estate, we craft powerful yet elegant Rieslings – fruity, mineral, and with high aging potential. Wines from a single vineyard show unique character and come from classified vineyards with ideal growing conditions. Premier cru wines come from these vineyards and have at least Spätlese quality. The vines have to root deep into the hard slate soil, which gives the Engehöller Bernstein its minerality. The soil consists of nearly 100% brown and grey slate. A harmonious composition of elegant fruit and mineral notes are typical for this vineyard.

The vintage 2003:

The wine year began with sufficient winter precipitation, but then got off to a flying start. The heatwave began right in spring, making it one of the hottest years of the decade. This greatly accelerated growth. We had very early budding and extremely early flowering.
As a result, the development and ripening phases were very long. This gave us a good quantity with high must weights and produced powerful and ripe wines.
